Even the Lord’s house has complex challenges and legal issues that cause liabilities and hardships for churches. In order to be efficient and grow in the 21st century, churches need to be proactive in using a similar approach to that of successful businesses. Times have changed and here are 7 steps that are crucial for every church to take:
- Set Up Internal Controls – To prevent embezzlement and other losses.
- Get Expert Help – Create effective boards and leadership teams to be your eyes and ears.
- Risk Management – Know how to manage risks before setting up shelters, children’s programs, or transportation issues.
- Training Programs – Have regular leadership training programs to address ongoing changes in the law.
- Social Media Training – Understand the consequences of posting videos of children, copyright infringement, etc.
- Fundraising Practices – Why hire a professional fundraiser and
- Communications Strategies – During crisis situations or during special projects the church will need to provide the right messaging to its congregation and to the community at large. Know how to communicate during this process!
There are many challenging issues facing our churches, pastors, congregations and the communities in which our churches serve. Don’t become a victim of a “wolf in sheep’s clothing”. If your church hasn’t taken these safeguards, it’s prudent that you get started now before disaster walks through the door. Next, consult legal counsel to make sure there are no missteps that could pose a legal quandary for you later.
